Chapter 8 - The Girl Raised by the Enemy

Ava Vale believed Conrad was her father.
He wasn't.
DNA confirmed Michael Reese.
Biological father.
Grace Nolan.
Biological mother.
Michael stared at the report.
His entire body changed.
For two decades he believed his infant daughter died with Grace during an escape attempt.
Conrad had taken her.
Raised her.
Named her Ava.
Educated her.
Made her a scientist.
She now worked inside Meridian continuing the same research that stole her from her parents.
Michael wanted to tell her immediately.
Maya stopped him.
“Imagine someone walking into your life and saying your father is a kidnapper, your career is built on abuse and your identity is false.”
Michael's jaw tightened.
“It's true.”
“That doesn't mean she'll believe it in ten seconds.”
Again, truth required care.
They contacted Ava privately.
She refused to meet.
Then sent Daniel a message:
STOP DIGGING.
Michael wrote:
Grace Nolan was your mother.
No response.
Twenty minutes later:
PROVE IT.
Good.
Evidence.
Not persuasion.
They sent independent DNA options.
Ava chose a lab herself.
Result confirmed.
She disappeared from Meridian headquarters that night.
Conrad publicly accused Daniel's group of kidnapping her.
She arrived at the hospital voluntarily.
Twenty years old.
Dark blond hair.
Gray-blue eyes.
Michael saw Grace immediately.
Ava stared at him.
No hug.
No tears initially.
Just:
“You're shorter than I expected.”
Michael laughed once.
Then cried.
Ava's anger was not directed only at Conrad.
“You knew I existed?”
“For three weeks before the escape.”
“And then?”
“I thought you died.”
“You stopped looking?”
“No.”
He showed her twenty years of searches.
Files.
Photos.
Dead ends.
Ava cried then.
But reconciliation would take time.
Her knowledge changed everything.
Conrad's current plan centered on the Reese boys.
Why?
He believed combining Daniel's neural adaptability with Grace-line regeneration could produce a therapy for catastrophic brain injury.
A worthy medical goal.
Achieved through stolen bodies.
Noah carried Grace-line material through his donor.
Daniel carried Generation 2 neural adaptation.
Leo and Eli offered natural-combination comparisons.
Conrad believed the family collectively held the missing data.
Ava had argued for consent-based research.
Conrad told her children could not consent.
Therefore guardians would interfere.
So he bypassed guardians.
Twisted logic.
Ava had recently begun sabotaging data collection.
She was the person who engraved Leo's tag?
No.
Field operations did.
But she inserted the hidden message:
NOT LEO.
THE OTHER BOY.
Again, which boy?
Daniel.
She knew Daniel was central.
Ava was also the person who alerted Maya about Haven.
Several supposed mysteries converged without making one mastermind responsible for everything.
Then Conrad made his move.
Not kidnapping.
Court.
Meridian filed emergency petitions claiming Daniel lacked competence and Emily endangered minors by associating with known criminal Michael Reese.
They sought temporary medical guardianship over Noah because his creation contract—an obscene document signed by researchers before his birth—listed Meridian as custodian of embryonic material.
Legally absurd.
But enough to force a hearing.
Emily was horrified.
“You can't own a child.”
They could not.
The court rejected the ownership theory immediately.
But the case exposed Noah's genetic origins publicly.
Media arrived.
Cameras outside hospital.
Headlines.
“LAB-CREATED CHILD.”
Noah could not read.
Good.
But someday he would.
Emily demanded privacy orders.
Granted partly.
Then Conrad leaked Leo's memory videos.
Public fascination exploded.
The family became spectacle.
Daniel understood.
Conrad wanted chaos.
If Meridian fell, he would make the children famous enough that privacy became impossible.
Punishment.
Ava decided to testify.
That destroyed Conrad's strongest defense.
She described Haven.
Subject tracking.
Daniel's suppression.
Eli's conditioning.
Unauthorized genetic creation.
Conrad was arrested pending federal charges.
Meridian's board fractured.
Daniel's legal control strengthened.
It seemed victory approached.
Then Eli disappeared.
Not from a facility.
From Emily's temporary home.
No forced entry.
No struggle.
One note in childish writing:
I WENT WITH MAYA.
Maya was gone too.
Emily called.
No answer.
Noah looked at the note.
“He spelled went wrong.”
Everyone stared.
“What?”
Noah pointed.
Eli could read simple words unusually well because Meridian taught him.
The note spelled:
WENT.
Correctly.
“No,” Noah insisted. “Eli writes it WNET.”
Emily remembered drawings.
He did transpose letters.
The note was fake.
Someone took Eli.
Maya may have been taken too.
Then Leo toddled toward the kitchen cabinet.
He pointed repeatedly.
“May.”
Anna opened it.
A phone.
Maya's hidden emergency phone.
One video recorded automatically.
A man entered through the back door.
No mask.
Maya recognized him.
She did not resist immediately.
“Dr. Keller,” he said.
Maya answered:
“You're dead.”
The man smiled.
Michael went pale when shown the frame.
Daniel's eyes widened.
Sarah whispered:
“No.”
The man was Thomas Reese.
Daniel and Michael's adoptive father.
The man who supposedly died fifteen years earlier.
The man who had originally smuggled Daniel out of Meridian.
Their childhood rescuer.
May you like
Alive.
And apparently working with whoever had taken Eli.
