Chapter 8 - Graham’s Real Job

Graham did not run Harbor.

He guarded its exit.

That was his claim.

Adrian summoned him to Grand Central with police present.

Graham arrived alone.

He saw the archive.

His shoulders dropped.

“Evelyn finally gave it to Sarah.”

Sarah said:

“You knew it was mine.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me for sixteen months.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know whether Luke had told you enough to survive knowing.”

Sarah nearly laughed.

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“Another person deciding ignorance was protection.”

Graham accepted it.

No defense.

Adrian held up the recorder marked G.H.

“What did my mother mean?”

Graham sat.

“I worked for her before I worked for Daniel.”

Adrian stared.

“You said you joined after she died.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Evelyn ordered it.”

Graham had been twenty-nine.

Former military intelligence.

Evelyn hired him privately after discovering Daniel’s risk operation.

When the plane crash created the opportunity to disappear, Graham helped build Harbor’s security.

Then Evelyn made him do something he hated.

Return to Daniel.

Become trusted.

Watch Adrian.

“Spy on my father?”

“Yes.”

“On me?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked furious.

Graham continued:

“My real job was to stop Daniel from turning you into a legal front.”

“Did you?”

“Poorly.”

Adrian’s signatures allowed old structures to continue.

Graham failed.

Why remain after Daniel died?

Because Evelyn still refused to return.

Someone had to monitor the Mercer systems.

Graham became permanent.

Protecting Adrian without his consent.

Again.

“What happened to Luke?” Sarah asked.

Graham looked at her.

“I followed him.”

“On the day he died?”

“Yes.”

“Were you on the twenty-seventh floor?”

“Yes.”

The room went still.

Sarah’s hands shook.

“Did you push him?”

“No.”

“Did you touch him?”

“Yes.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Sarah stepped forward.

“How?”

Graham explained.

Luke found a hidden archive behind a movable wall on the twenty-seventh floor.

Graham confronted him.

Luke ran.

Not because Graham threatened him.

Because another man entered from the opposite corridor.

Who?

Graham did not know then.

Luke recognized him.

Panic.

He went through the maintenance terrace.

Graham followed.

Luke climbed over a safety divider trying to reach another stairwell.

Graham grabbed his arm.

Luke slipped.

Graham held him.

For several seconds.

Then the other man appeared in the doorway.

Luke looked past Graham.

He shouted one sentence:

“Tell Sarah Harbor has a son.”

Then Luke’s hand tore free.

He fell.

Sarah stopped breathing.

Graham’s eyes were wet.

“I could not hold him.”

She slapped him.

Hard.

Police shifted.

Graham did not.

“You let them call it suicide.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the man in the doorway was still inside Mercer security.”

“Who?”

Graham looked at Adrian.

“Paul Danner.”

Daniel’s old security chief.

Supposedly dead twelve years.

Another dead man?

They verified.

Danner’s death certificate.

Heart attack.

Cremation.

No retained DNA.

Could be false.

But Graham said he later learned it was not Danner himself.

A son.

Marcus Danner.

Same build.

Similar face.

Luke had found records connecting him to Harbor’s compromised branch.

Harbor has a son.

Not Adrian.

Danner.

Marcus inherited access.

Why?

Paul Danner helped Daniel control witness movement.

After Evelyn created Harbor, Danner infiltrated its logistics.

His son later inherited those channels.

This was the person Evelyn meant?

“Maybe,” Graham said.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

“Then what do you know?”

Graham produced files.

Marcus Danner worked through private logistics firms.

One handled Mercer security vehicles.

The SUV on Forty-Third.

The removed checkpoint.

The altered route.

Marcus had access.

He likely engineered the collision.

Sarah’s face hardened.

“He tried to kill my baby.”

“We don’t know his intent.”

“I don’t care.”

Adrian did.

Not to excuse.

To understand.

If Marcus wanted Sarah dead, a hit-and-run could work.

Why arrange a confrontation where Adrian would be present?

Why allow Sarah to reach the car?

Why place the blue swallow directly in Adrian’s sight?

Maybe Marcus wanted Adrian to see it.

That changed motive.

Graham agreed.

“Marcus has spent years trying to force Harbor archives into the open.”

“Why?”

“Because he believes Evelyn destroyed his father.”

How?

Paul Danner had been loyal to Daniel.

After Evelyn exposed parts of the operation, Daniel sacrificed Danner publicly during a federal investigation.

Danner lost career, family, reputation.

Marcus blamed Evelyn.

Yet Marcus also blamed Daniel.

He hated both sides.

“Then what does he want?”

Graham looked at the archive.

“The same thing everyone wants from old secrets.”

“What?”

“To choose which version becomes history.”

Sarah thought of Luke.

He died because he refused to let one version win.

Graham then admitted the worst part of his own guilt.

After Luke fell, Graham took his phone.

Deleted one file.

Sarah’s voice went cold.

“What file?”

“A photograph.”

“Of?”

“Evelyn.”

“Why?”

“Because she was alive.”

“You protected her.”

“Yes.”

“At the cost of my husband’s case.”

“Yes.”

Sarah wanted to hit him again.

Instead she asked:

“Did Evelyn know Luke died?”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

“She blamed me.”

“Did she forgive you?”

“No.”

Good.

Some things should remain broken.

Adrian asked:

“Where is Marcus?”

“We don’t know.”

Then Sarah remembered the black H button found near the stroller.

Not Holt.

Perhaps Harbor logistics?

Graham examined it.

His face changed.

“That isn’t mine.”

“What is it?”

He turned it.

Tiny letters beneath H:

HARBOR HOUSE.

A safe location.

One of Evelyn’s oldest.

Location closed twenty years.

Or so Graham believed.

Address:

Brooklyn waterfront.

Sarah looked at Adrian.

“We’re going.”

Graham said:

“No.”

May you like

Sarah turned.

“Watch me.”
