Chapter 8 - Sophie
DNA answered the first question.
Sophie was biologically Daniel and Claire’s daughter.
She had been born through an unauthorized embryo transfer to a gestational carrier.
The clinic records were falsified.
The carrier believed she was carrying an embryo for an anonymous couple.
After birth, Sophie entered a private adoption.
Her adoptive parents knew nothing.
Again, Daniel refused the language others immediately used.
“Our daughter.”
Biologically, yes.
But Sophie already had parents.
A home.
A life.
She was not property waiting to be reclaimed.
“What happened in the basement?”
Evelyn had contacted Sophie’s adoptive family under the pretense of investigating clinic fraud.
They brought Sophie voluntarily.
Then Claire discovered it.
She went to confront Evelyn.
Sarah followed with Lucas and Sophia.
Sophia wandered downstairs.
The two girls met.
That was what Sophia saw.
Not a prisoner.
A child who looked eerily like her.
Sarah later locked Sophia outside because she feared Sophia would tell Daniel everything before Sarah found the black key.
Cruelty born from panic.
Still cruelty.
Then Daniel asked the question nobody wanted.
“Why was Sophie created?”
Project Lantern documents gave conflicting answers.
One said reproductive error.
Another said controlled sibling-placement comparison.
Two genetically related children raised in different environments.
Nature versus nurture.
Daniel felt sick.
“Human beings aren’t case studies.”
Yet someone had treated them that way.
Claire finally returned.
Not dramatically.
No rescue.
She walked into the federal office exhausted and furious.
Daniel saw her.
Relief came first.
Then anger.
“You involved Sophia.”
“I know.”
“You hid evidence with her.”
“I know.”
“You knew my mother was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t tell me.”
“No.”
Claire didn’t defend herself immediately.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So did everyone else.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
That stopped him.
She understood.
“I was wrong.”
They sat together.
Not reconciled.
Not separated.
Just two parents realizing their family had been manipulated from several directions.
Then Claire explained the black key.
It accessed Lantern’s physical master index.
Not digital.
Evelyn possessed half.
Claire had the other.
Sarah thought Sophia knew where Claire hid it.
“Where is it?”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“I gave it to someone I trusted.”
“Who?”
“Your father.”
Daniel froze.
“Dad?”
Richard Carter.
Seventy-two.
Retired contractor.
Quiet.
Unremarkable.
The man who had supposedly identified Evelyn’s body six years ago.
Daniel suddenly saw the problem.
Richard had lied about Evelyn’s death.
“What exactly did Dad know?”
Claire’s face changed.
“More than I realized.”
They called him.
No answer.
Police went to his house.
Empty.
His truck gone.
The black key gone.
On his kitchen table:
Sophia’s fifth-birthday invitation.
Beside it, a Lantern file.
SUBJECT R-1.
Richard Carter.
Daniel stared.
His father hadn’t married into Glass Harbor.
He had been part of it before Evelyn.
