Chapter 10 - Daniel’s second phone was still turned on
They found the phone in my father’s storage unit.
Not because he confessed.
Because a search warrant followed the evidence.
The device had been powered off for most of the previous two weeks.
Then, inexplicably, it connected to a network for seven minutes the day after my parents returned from vacation.
My father had tried to access it.
That mistake created location data.
The storage unit contained boxes of family records, golf clubs, old company files, and Daniel’s black company phone wrapped inside one of Arturo’s resort shirts.
I learned that detail later.
I wish I had not.
The phone was encrypted.
Daniel’s company retained a recovery system for certain enterprise devices.
It took days.
When the contents were finally extracted, the case changed.
Not because Daniel had secretly recorded murder.
There was no murder.
The phone contained his work.
Emails.
Photographs.
Audit notes.
And one audio memo created at 6:29 p.m. on the night he died.
Ten minutes before the crash.
Daniel’s voice:
Arturo is behind me. Emma’s in the car. I’m not stopping.
Rain could be heard against the windshield.

If something happens, do not assume he caused it. I’m recording because he is trying to recover the lender files.
I covered my mouth.
Even then, Daniel had been more careful than my grief.
Do not assume he caused it.
He knew my father was following him.
He was frightened.
Yet he refused to turn suspicion into a claim unsupported by evidence.
Then Daniel explained why Arturo was desperate.
He had discovered the fraudulent guarantees.
Greybridge.
The lender package.
Insurance declaration page.
But there was one more issue.
A performance bond on one of Ryan’s developments had been obtained using financial statements that included receivables which did not exist.
If the bond company discovered the misrepresentation, it could investigate everyone who certified the package.
Ryan.
Arturo.
Possibly Daniel’s company, because some supporting documents bore forged Daniel signatures.
Arturo feared the fraud could spread beyond Ryan’s failing projects into Daniel’s legitimate construction firm.
That was the “ugly thing” Daniel referenced in his voicemail to me.
He was not merely trying to protect his money.
He was trying to keep his company from becoming evidence inside another family’s fraud.
Then came the final audio file.
Recorded earlier that afternoon.
Daniel and Arturo.
Apparently at Arturo’s office.
Daniel:
“Tell Ryan tonight or I do.”
Arturo:
“You think Claire survives watching her brother go to prison?”
Daniel:
“Stop using Claire.”
Arturo:
“I’m protecting my daughter.”
Daniel:
“No. You’re protecting the version of yourself she still respects.”
Silence.
Then Arturo said:
“If Ryan falls, Patricia and I lose everything.”
Daniel:
“No. You lose investments.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it.”
Arturo did.
Years earlier, he borrowed heavily against retirement and property to fund Ryan’s expansion.
Patricia did not know the full amount.
If Ryan defaulted, my parents could lose their primary residence.
There it was.
Arturo had hidden debts from my mother too.
Patricia helped forge a document later.
She helped conceal the crash.
She chose the vacation.
But even she had not known how much money Arturo had put at risk.
My father was not preserving family wealth.
He was hiding the fact that he had gambled it.
Then Daniel asked:
“Does Patricia know you used her signature on the Solano guarantee?”
Arturo did not answer.
I froze.
Another forged signature.
My mother’s.
Arturo had apparently used Patricia’s name too.
The man who taught everyone to treat consent as optional had not limited that lesson to me.
Then the audio ended with Daniel saying:
“I’m taking this to Evelyn tonight.”
That explained everything.
Arturo followed.
Not to kill him.
To stop the folder from reaching an attorney.
And after the crash, he saw an opportunity he had never planned for but immediately used.
He removed the briefcase.
Then returned home believing Daniel’s evidence had died with him.
