Chapter 9 - The Sealed Birth Record

Vincent was Eleanor's son.

DNA proved it.

That should have ended the question.

It didn't.

Because Margaret's sealed child existed.

A boy born one year before Vincent.

Nora obtained the court record.

Name:

MICHAEL MERCER CALLAHAN.

What happened to him?

Declared dead at six months.

No death certificate.

We were learning.

No body meant keep looking.

Eleanor finally joined us.

She saw the certificate and sat down.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

Vincent's voice turned cold.

“Of course.”

Margaret and Patrick Callahan had been young.

Their marriage collapsed.

Margaret discovered Patrick's brutality and left.

Their son Michael remained with Patrick briefly.

Then vanished.

Patrick told everyone the baby died.

Margaret never believed him.

Years later she married Daniel Mercer, Patrick Mercer's older brother.

My father.

Meaning Michael was my maternal half-brother.

And Vincent's paternal half-brother.

A bridge between us.

“Where is Michael?”

Eleanor looked toward Evan.

I followed her gaze.

No.

Evan laughed bitterly.

“Finally.”

My husband was Michael.

I couldn't process it.

Evan Foster wasn't his birth name.

He had been adopted through a closed arrangement and discovered his identity years later.

He knew Margaret was his biological mother.

He knew I was his half-sister.

My stomach turned.

“No.”

Evan immediately shook his head.

“Claire, I didn't know when we met.”

“When did you know?”

Silence.

“When?”

“After you became pregnant.”

I stood and struck him.

He didn't defend himself.

“You knew?”

“I left you the morning I confirmed it.”

Three days earlier.

The stolen medical records contained DNA data.

Evan discovered our relationship.

He panicked.

His promise to find help had been partly true.

He had intended to bring rescuers and then disappear from my life forever.

I couldn't breathe.

My marriage.

My child.

Everything suddenly felt contaminated.

Nora intervened carefully.

“Claire, prenatal records show no immediate indication of a health problem. But proper independent medical evaluation is important.”

I barely heard her.

Vincent moved toward me.

Then stopped.

He didn't touch me without permission.

That mattered.

Evan was crying.

“I loved you before I knew.”

“Stop.”

“I swear—”

“Stop.”

He did.

Then I asked the question I feared.

“Did Patrick Mercer know?”

“Yes.”

My uncle knew Evan was my half-brother.

And deliberately allowed our relationship to continue.

Why?

Genetics.

Again.

Patrick Mercer wanted a child combining specific Mercer and Callahan lines.

My daughter wasn't an accident to him.

She was another experiment.

Something inside Vincent snapped.

He slammed his fist into the table.

Everyone froze.

“Enough.”

His voice was quiet.

Terrifying.

“No more bloodlines. No more tests without consent. No more children used as currency.”

Then his phone rang.

Patrick Mercer.

Vincent answered.

My uncle laughed.

“Now you understand.”

Vincent's face hardened.

“I'm coming for you.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

“Bring Claire.”

“No.”

“Then bring Michael.”

Vincent looked at Evan.

“Why?”

Patrick Mercer sounded delighted.

“Because Michael still doesn't know why Margaret gave him away.”

Evan froze.

Patrick continued.

“She wasn't protecting him from Patrick Callahan.”

May you like

Pause.

“She was protecting Patrick Callahan from him.”
