Chapter 10 - The inheritance inside the inheritance

The famous “one-thousand-dollar card” was connected to Grandpa’s trust.

But Grandpa’s trust was only half the story.

Laura had her own assets.

Years before her death, she invested small amounts into several private companies connected to Donovan Industrial Supply.

Some failed.

Others exploded in value.

Grandpa, impressed by her financial instincts, occasionally invested alongside her.

When Laura died, her holdings should have transferred into a custodial account for me.

They didn’t.

Richard petitioned to control portions of my estate after adoption.

Documents were filed.

Assets moved.

Some disappeared.

Some merged into Grandpa’s structures later when he discovered what Richard had done.

It was a maze.

Untangling it would take months.

Maybe years.

Michael refused to tell me a definitive value that day.

Good.

Numbers without verified ownership would have been fantasy.

But one thing was obvious.

It was not one thousand dollars.

It was not remotely close.

Richard had spent five years hoping I would never activate the card because doing so triggered identity verification.

Grandpa had deliberately designed the system that way.

Then bank investigators uncovered the alert that brought Richard running.

Charles Weller had inserted himself as a notification contact.

Any in-person beneficiary inquiry generated an automatic message.

That was how Richard knew.

Simple.

Ugly.

No supernatural coincidence.

No mysterious surveillance.

Just manipulated paperwork.

Then Weller tried fleeing.

He made it as far as O’Hare before investigators contacted authorities.

Whether he would ultimately face criminal charges depended on evidence and prosecutors.

But his files were seized through appropriate legal processes.

Inside was a folder titled:

E.D. Resolution.

My initials.

It contained proposed documents for me to sign if I ever discovered the trust.

Settlement agreement.

Confidentiality clause.

Release of claims.

A payment amount large enough to impress someone who believed she had nothing.

But tiny compared with the assets potentially involved.

Richard’s contingency plan.

Lie first.

Buy me off second.

Then one document caught my attention.

A handwritten instruction from Richard:

If Emily refuses, use military issue.

“What military issue?”

Michael didn’t know.

Stephen didn’t know.

Susan went pale.

I looked at her.

“What?”

May you like

She whispered:

“Richard tried to have you declared financially incompetent after your second deployment.”
