Chapter 2 - The Men and Women Behind the Truth

Bobby turned.

A small group of polished executives had just stepped into the waiting area.

Three men.

Two women.

Dark suits.

Measured expressions.

The kind of posture built by power and old money.

At the center of them was Margaret Ellison, Chair of the Vanguard Holdings board.

She had been in corporate leadership long enough to know how to enter a room without raising her voice and still make half the oxygen disappear.

The moment her eyes landed on Dalon, her face shifted into formal recognition.

“Mr. Fischer,” she said again, now with unmistakable respect, “we were told your flight boarded from this gate.”

Silence swept outward like a ripple.

Bobby’s hand, still wrapped around the tote strap, slowly loosened.

One of the board members glanced from Dalon to the luggage at his feet.

Then to Bobby.

Then back to Dalon.

No one said anything for a few seconds.

That was what made it worse.

The travelers understood before Bobby did.

Dalon was not a porter.

He was not staff.

He was not beneath her.

He stood straight, calm, utterly unhurried.

And because he did not scramble to explain himself, everyone else was forced to confront what they had just watched.

Margaret looked at Bobby.

“Is there a problem here?”

Bobby let out a short, brittle laugh.

“No. Of course not. I just—there seems to be some misunderstanding.”

Dalon said nothing.

One of the other board members, Henry Lowe, stared at Bobby with open disbelief.

“Some misunderstanding,” he repeated softly.

Margaret’s eyes returned to Dalon.

“Should we continue this in the lounge?”

She had chosen her words carefully.

Not because she doubted him.

Because she already knew the answer and was giving him the dignity of deciding how public this moment would become.

Dalon picked up his tablet.

Then he looked directly at Bobby.

And only then did the final piece land inside her.

Because she recognized his name.

Not from the airport.

From a confidential acquisition memo.

From the sealed internal briefing she had skimmed the previous week when Zenith Innovations was quietly absorbed by Vanguard Holdings.

The appointment had not yet been publicly released, but the board had been preparing for a leadership transition at the parent level.

A new CEO.

Dalon Fischer.

Her face drained.

Margaret turned slightly, as if formally completing the reality Bobby could no longer deny.

“Ms. Scott,” she said, “allow me to introduce Mr. Dalon Fischer, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Vanguard Holdings.”

A man near the gate let out a low whistle before his wife elbowed him into silence.

The terminal became painfully bright.

Bobby swallowed.

“Mr. Fischer,” she said weakly, “I didn’t realize—”

“No,” Dalon said. “You didn’t.”

May you like

Nothing about his tone was loud.

Nothing needed to be.
