Chapter 2 - What the camera actually showed

Nobody spoke.

Mrs. Sharp stared at the frozen frame.

At first, the image looked harmless.

Students were returning from recess.

Lucas’s backpack hung from the hook beside his desk.

Mrs. Sharp stood nearby.

Her right hand was inside it.

Principal Henderson stepped closer to the monitor.

“That could be anything.”

Rob looked at him.

“Correct.”

He did not accuse.

That mattered.

He simply pressed play.

Mrs. Sharp withdrew her hand.

Then moved toward her desk.

Lucas entered thirty seconds later.

He never approached her wallet.

He never even crossed that side of the room.

One of the younger officers looked at her.

“You said he was alone in here.”

“He was earlier.”

“When?”

“I don’t remember.”

Rob rewound again.

10:09.

Mrs. Sharp entered.

10:11.

A janitor passed through the doorway.

10:12.

Principal Henderson appeared briefly.

10:14.

Mrs. Sharp opened Lucas’s backpack.

10:15.

She returned to her desk.

Then something odd happened.

The footage jumped.

10:15:23 became 10:18:51.

Rob leaned forward.

“Three minutes twenty-eight seconds missing.”

Principal Henderson immediately said:

“The system glitches.”

Rob looked at him.

“How often?”

“Sometimes.”

“Conveniently today?”

Henderson’s face tightened.

Mrs. Sharp tried recovering.

“Lucas could still have taken the money before that.”

“Then we investigate.”

Rob turned toward the officers.

“Preserve the original recording, system logs, camera access history and all available corridor footage.”

Mrs. Sharp’s panic deepened.

“You can’t seize school systems because of five hundred dollars.”

Rob corrected her.

“We’re not seizing anything right now. We’re preserving evidence relating to an accusation against a child.”

Then he looked at Lucas.

“Did anyone ask you to open your backpack before your father arrived?”

Lucas nodded.

“Mrs. Sharp.”

“What happened?”

“She dumped everything out.”

“Did she find money?”

“No.”

Mrs. Sharp snapped:

“He could have hidden it somewhere else!”

I finally spoke.

“Then why did you demand cash from me instead of calling police first?”

Her face changed.

Principal Henderson stepped between us.

“Mr. Bennett, emotions are high.”

“Mine aren’t.”

That unsettled him.

People expect men in stained work clothes to either shrink or explode.

I did neither.

Rob knew why.

We had served together years before, long before he moved into law enforcement and I walked away from a different kind of uniform.

Mrs. Sharp didn’t know that.

Neither did Henderson.

I intended to keep it irrelevant.

Then one officer returned from the hallway.

“Colonel.”

“Yes?”

“We checked the corridor camera.”

He hesitated.

“There’s another issue.”

“What?”

“At 10:16, someone entered Classroom 205 through the side storage door.”

Mrs. Sharp went pale.

Henderson looked worse.

Rob asked:

“Who?”

The officer turned the tablet.

The figure’s face was partially hidden.

But the school ID badge was visible.

Principal Henderson.
