Chapter 4 - THE DAUGHTER WHO PLANNED TO BETRAY HER MOTHER
Chloe had not been helping Vanessa out of loyalty.
She had her own plan.
The office login history showed she entered the succession portal using credentials copied from Vanessa’s tablet.
She attempted to replace Miguel with a newly formed management company called CKB Holdings.
The initials stood for Chloe Katherine Brooks.
If the change succeeded, temporary control of Bennett Grounds would pass to her company if I became incapacitated.
Vanessa had promised Chloe the Corvette.
Chloe intended to take everything.
When confronted, she blamed her mother.
“Mom said Arthur was practically gone.”
I was sitting upright by then, stronger after antibiotics and treatment.
“I am in the room.”
Chloe avoided my eyes.
“She said you wanted us protected.”
“Protected from what?”
“Your employees. Miguel. Margaret’s family. Anyone who might challenge us.”
Margaret had no surviving close relatives.
The threat was invented to justify urgency.
Chloe admitted creating the false power of attorney.
She said Vanessa provided samples of my signature and promised I had verbally approved it.
“Did I ever tell you that myself?”
“No.”
“Then you knew you did not have consent.”
Tears appeared.

“You never treated me like a daughter.”
I stared at her.
I had paid two years of her rent.
Covered credit-card debt.
Funded a certification course she never finished.
Added her to my roadside assistance.
Bought her a used car before she decided only the Corvette was good enough.
“I treated you like family,” I said. “You treated me like an estate.”
Vanessa turned on Chloe.
“You stupid girl. I told you not to touch the company account.”
“You were going to leave me scraps.”
“I was going to take care of you.”
“You were going to keep the house, the investments, and the business.”
Their alliance collapsed in less than a minute.
Not because either felt remorse.
Because each discovered the other had planned to steal more.
Evelyn preserved the login records and requested emergency restrictions on all succession changes.
Miguel’s trustee position remained intact.
Then Tessa called from the office with another discovery.
Chloe had accessed employee files.
Not payroll.
Not contracts.
Medical-benefit records.
She searched specifically for longtime employees with retirement claims against the company.
Miguel’s name appeared first.
Vanessa had been telling me for months that the business could not afford my generous retirement promises.
Now Chloe had copied the obligations.

Because CKB Holdings had prepared a draft acquisition proposal valuing Bennett Grounds far below its actual worth.
The low valuation excluded employee retirement commitments and several company-owned properties.
If I died and the false authority took effect, Chloe intended to sell the business quickly to a private buyer.

The company was called Northstar Facilities Group.
Its representative was Vanessa’s former husband, Richard Brooks.
Chloe’s father.
Vanessa had secretly reunited with Richard—not romantically, she insisted, but financially.
Together, they planned to strip my company, sell its contracts, and leave longtime employees with unfunded promises.
Miguel read the acquisition draft in silence.
