Chapter 3 - You Locked His Mother Out at Seventeen

Marcus did not raise his voice.

That made him more intimidating.

“Do not touch her.”

Richard stared at him.

“Who are you?”

“The person telling you to step back.”

“I am her father.”

Marcus’s expression did not change.

“You surrendered that role twenty years ago.”

I remained where I was.

My eyes burned, but I refused to retreat.

Behind me, Ethan looked from Richard to me, stunned by the word grandson and by the violence hidden inside an elegant family confrontation.

Vivian clutched her handbag.

“You are humiliating us.”

I turned toward Ethan.

For one second, I saw him at five years old asleep over an anatomy book.

At twelve, waiting tables after school because he wanted to help Clara.

At sixteen, opening an early-admission letter with shaking hands.

Then I looked back at my parents.

“You locked his mother out at seventeen.”

The sentence traveled through the room.

Several guests recoiled.

Richard tried to laugh, but his face had gone red.

“That is an absurd simplification.”

“You gave me ten minutes to pack.”

“You were defiant.”

“I was pregnant.”

“You embarrassed the family.”

“No,” I said. “You abandoned a child so your friends would not know she made a choice you disliked.”

Vivian reached toward Ethan.

“We are his blood.”

Ethan stepped back before she could touch him.

That single movement shattered something in her expression.

She had believed biology would give her instant access.

As though blood erased absence.

As though the word grandmother created twenty years of memories by itself.

Ethan’s voice remained calm.

“Did you know about me?”

Vivian hesitated.

Richard answered.

“We knew Emma had given birth.”

My son went very still.

“Did you ever ask if I was alive?”

Neither answered.

The crowd began whispering.

Richard’s control slipped.

“This is a private family matter.”

“You made it public when you introduced yourselves to reporters,” Marcus said.

He lifted his black folder.

Richard’s eyes fixed on it.

“What is that?”

Marcus opened the folder and raised a sealed legal document.

Richard lunged toward it.

Marcus pivoted smoothly, keeping it out of reach while hospital security moved closer.

My father froze.

Vivian stared at the blurred document.

Her face drained of color.

She recognized the name visible beneath the seal.

Clara Moretti.

Marcus looked directly at Richard.

“Clara protected the family you threw away.”

My hand tightened around Ethan’s sleeve.

He looked at me.

Then at the document.

Then back toward the people who had suddenly appeared to claim him.

May you like

He understood the story was larger than abandonment.

And my parents understood that Clara had left behind something they could not control.
