Chapter 12 - The locked metal box

The condo became relevant through the financial investigation and divorce process.
I did not storm inside.
I did not break locks.
I had spent too many years saving people from reckless decisions to become reckless now.
Records eventually revealed the condo contained a locked metal document box.
Mitchell resisted disclosure.
That made everyone interested.
When it was lawfully opened, there was no mountain of cash.
Something worse.
Loan agreements.
Insurance documents.
Copies of my identification.
Old tax returns.
Samples of my signature.
I felt physically ill.
Someone had assembled a file capable of impersonating me financially.
Then Megan found a life-insurance application.
Insured:
Danielle Reeves.
Proposed beneficiary:
Mitchell Reeves.
Amount:
$750,000.
I stared.
“Did this become active?”
“No.”
Thank God.
The application had stalled because medical verification was incomplete.
But my old clinic information had been included.
Mitchell insisted it was ordinary estate planning.
Without my knowledge?
With copied signatures?
Investigators and attorneys would determine what could actually be proved.
I refused to turn suspicion into certainty.
But another document was unquestionably real.
A draft separation agreement.
Prepared months earlier.
It described the townhouse as predominantly Mitchell’s contribution.
False.
It described the cabin as Mitchell’s separate business asset.
False.
It stated I had voluntarily agreed to assume certain household liabilities.
Also false.
My signature line was blank.
Now I understood the birthday.
Mitchell needed signatures.
Theresa’s pressure wasn’t random cruelty that morning.
They wanted me tired.
Emotional.
Compliant.
Maybe Mitchell intended to present papers as routine refinancing documents.
Maybe something else.
But the plan had depended on the same thing our marriage always depended on:
Danielle doesn’t fight.
Danielle forgives.
Danielle signs.
Danielle stays.
That woman no longer existed.
Then Megan uncovered an email Mitchell sent to his notary contact.
Subject:
Saturday completion.
One line inside:
Once D signs, everything moves Monday.
D.
Me.
May you like
My birthday had not been forgotten.
It had been selected.
