Chapter 5 - The Performance They Walked IntoEthan arrived first.
Of course he did.
He walked into my hospital room wearing a charcoal polo and the expression of a man rehearsing grief. Linda followed close behind in a cream blazer, pearl earrings, and soft pink lipstick—the uniform of a respectable woman preparing to lie.
Walter came too.
He stayed near the door.
Still silent.
Still hoping silence could protect him.
For one strange second, Ethan almost looked relieved to see me conscious.
Not because I was alive.
Because conscious women can be manipulated.
“Elena,” he said gently, stepping closer to the bed. “Thank God. We’ve been so worried.”
Linda dabbed at the corner of her dry eye.
“You gave us such a fright.”
I did not answer.
The nurse remained near the monitor, pretending to check an IV line. Dr. Rachel stood by the chart station at the foot of the bed.
Ethan glanced at her and then back at me.
“We should get you discharged home as soon as possible,” he said. “This whole thing has spiraled because you were upset.”
Linda added quickly, “She gets emotional. Always has.”
Dr. Rachel looked up.
“Emotional?” she repeated.
Ethan smiled like a patient husband enduring misunderstanding.
“She fell during an argument,” he said smoothly. “My mother tried to help. Elena was embarrassed. You know how accidents can look.”
My fingers tightened beneath the blanket.
Not from fear.
From disbelief at how easily cruelty dressed itself as concern.
Then Linda made her mistake.
“She always overreacts when she feels disrespected,” she said.
Dr. Rachel tilted her head.
“Interesting choice of words.”
Ethan shot Linda a warning glance.
Too late.
The room had shifted.
The nurse moved one inch closer to my bed.
Walter’s eyes drifted to the hallway like a man sensing fire before smoke.
Ethan tried once more.
“Doctor, if there’s paperwork, I can sign whatever’s needed.”
Dr. Rachel’s expression stayed perfectly neutral.
“I’m sure you’d like that.”
