Chapter 12 - Jason’s Offer

I did not let Jason inside.

We talked on the porch while Iris slept against my chest.

He handed me the envelope.

Inside were copies of messages between Diane and him.

He had been collecting evidence for two years.

“Why?”

“Because she stole from my children.”

Fair.

“Why are you successor trustee?”

“She offered it.”

“And you accepted.”

“To see what she was doing.”

Convenient.

I said exactly that.

He almost smiled.

“You sound like your father.”

That made me dislike him more.

Jason admitted he helped Diane draft legitimate trust documents years earlier.

But he denied the fake psychiatric report.

“Who did it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who else has access?”

“Rachel.”

I laughed.

“We’re doing this again?”

“Elena, Rachel isn’t stupid.”

I knew that.

Everyone treated her like a disaster because she played the role well.

But she had once finished two years of accounting coursework.

She knew financial software.

She knew Mom’s passwords.

She knew my history.

And unlike Diane, she had a direct reason to fear losing my money.

I called Rachel.

Straight to voicemail.

Then one text:

I’m sorry.

My stomach dropped.

I drove to her house.

Empty.

Closets open.

Suitcases gone.

Penny and Trevor were with Jason’s mother.

Rachel had left alone.

On the dining table sat a laptop.

Unlocked.

Maybe deliberately.

Inside was a folder:

ELENA.

Draft letters.

Forged signatures.

Bank forms.

The fake medical report.

My father’s fake “last wishes.”

Years of documents.

Rachel had not merely known.

She had built the paperwork.

Mom supplied pressure.

Rachel supplied execution.

I sat down because my legs stopped working.

The sister who constantly needed rescuing had quietly engineered the machinery that kept me rescuing her.

Then I found audio files.

Rachel and Mom arguing.

Diane:

This has gone too far.

Rachel:

She’s never going to stop paying if she thinks we still need her.

Diane:

I said no more loans in her name.

Rachel:

Then you explain to Penny why we lose the house.

Mom wasn't innocent.

But she had sometimes tried to stop.

Rachel kept escalating.

One recording dated two months earlier:

Diane:

Elena’s having a baby. We’re done.

Rachel:

No. Once she has the baby, she’ll be easier to guilt.

I felt physically ill.

Then the last file.

Recorded three days ago.

Rachel speaking alone:

If Elena finally cuts us off, Mom takes the blame.

She always does.

Afterward, I’ll tell Elena I had no idea.

My grief arrived before anger.

Because I had defended Rachel inside my own head even after learning she spent my inheritance.

I believed she was weaker.

Just as Mom taught me.

Rachel had turned weakness into camouflage.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Rachel.

“Elena, please listen.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m coming back.”

“Why?”

“Because Mom is on her way to your house.”

I looked at the clock.

Then heard tires stop outside.

Rachel whispered:

“She found out you have Dad’s letter.”

May you like

The call ended.

My front door flew open.
