Chapter 5 - The Story Behind the Polished Husband

Brandon’s public image began collapsing before I left the hospital.

Apex employees had always known him as charming.

Demanding, perhaps.

Temperamental behind closed doors.

But generous in public.

He funded shelters.

Appeared in campaigns against domestic violence.

Donated to Riverside’s emergency-care foundation.

He understood that philanthropy could operate like insulation.

The more publicly compassionate he appeared, the less believable private cruelty became.

The archive showed how deliberate that strategy was.

In one message to his public-relations director, he wrote that supporting shelters made the company “reputation-proof.”

In another, he joked that people trusted men photographed beside survivors.

My injuries were documented beside those messages.

So were previous hospital visits.

A sprained wrist he claimed happened during yoga.

A cracked rib he described as a cycling accident.

A concussion from “falling on the stairs.”

Each time, Brandon stayed near me and answered before I could.

The records formed a pattern no single explanation could survive.

Then investigators opened the financial folders.

The shell vendors were not random.

Several were controlled by Brandon’s friends.

One routed money to a private investigator he hired to monitor me.

Another paid for software installed on my phone.

A third covered renovations to a condominium I had never seen.

That apartment belonged to a woman named Celeste Ward, Apex’s communications director.

I initially assumed she was another mistress.

The truth was stranger.

Celeste had been helping Brandon prepare a false narrative about my mental state.

Draft emails described me as paranoid.

Unstable.

Obsessed with controlling the company.

They planned to claim my audit request resulted from a breakdown rather than legitimate financial concerns.

If I filed for divorce, they would argue I was attempting a hostile corporate takeover during a personal crisis.

Brandon did not merely intend to deny the abuse.

He planned to use my forensic investigation as proof I was irrational.

But Celeste made one mistake.

She preserved copies of Brandon’s instructions.

When his access disappeared and investigators contacted her, she hired her own attorney and surrendered the messages.

She claimed she had never known about the physical violence.

I did not know whether I believed her.

But the evidence she provided confirmed the scheme.

Brandon had built two cages around me.

One inside our home.

The other inside the story he planned to tell once I escaped.

The encrypted archive broke both.
