Chapter 6 - the morning they realized I was done protecting them

The next morning, Beatrice came to my apartment in person.

Not alone.

She brought Ethan.

Julian.

And Arthur.

No Chloe.

Probably because Chloe now had a reason to hide.

I didn’t invite them in.

I opened the door just enough to face them.

Beatrice still carried herself like a queen who expected the world to return to order the moment she spoke.

“Maya,” she said coldly, “you’ve made your point. This has gone far enough.”

I almost admired the phrasing.

As if I were the one who had gone too far.

Ethan looked exhausted.

Arthur looked ashamed.

Julian looked irritated.

No one looked innocent.

Beatrice continued.

“You will withdraw the fraud complaints, restore the cards, and apologize to this family for humiliating us.”

I said nothing.

“You’re destroying Ethan’s career.”

Still nothing.

She leaned closer.

“You owe this family.”

That sentence ended something in me forever.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did you tell her you hit me?”

He said nothing.

I looked at Arthur.

“Did you tell her you watched?”

He lowered his eyes.

I turned to Julian.

“Did you tell her you used a shell vendor and fake reimbursements?”

His face changed.

Beatrice snapped toward him.

“What is she talking about?”

For the first time, her control slipped.

I could see it in her eyes.

She had known they were taking money.

But perhaps not how carelessly.

Or how illegally.

Daniel stepped out from the hallway behind me then.

I had asked him to be there.

He held a slim folder in one hand.

“Mrs. Harper,” Beatrice said sharply, “this is a family matter.”

Daniel answered for me.

“No. It stopped being a family matter when your son committed assault and financial fraud, and when multiple members of your family benefited from unauthorized credit activity.”

Julian swore.

Ethan went pale.

Arthur whispered, “My God.”

Beatrice turned on Ethan.

“What did you do?”

He finally cracked.

“It was just temporary,” he said. “I was going to fix it.”

I laughed once, bitter and quiet.

That was always the story.

Temporary.

Until caught.

Then Chloe’s name came out.

Then the fake vendor.

Then the reimbursements.

Then Beatrice’s bounced mortgage.

Then the car note.

Then the gala spending.

Their perfect family image unraveled right there in my doorway.

When Beatrice realized Daniel had actual documentation, her strategy changed instantly.

She straightened her jacket and said the one thing I hadn’t expected:

“Well, if Maya wants to leave the marriage, she’ll leave with nothing.”

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“Actually,” he said, “Maya will be leaving with substantially more than you think.”

He handed me the folder.

Inside were not only the fraud documents and voice-record evidence.

There was also a postnuptial review request I had forgotten ever discussing during one of my earlier worried meetings with him.

Months ago, when something had started feeling wrong, I had quietly asked what would happen if I ever needed to get out.

Daniel had prepared more than I realized.

May you like

And now Ethan was seeing it for the first time.

Cliffhanger: Ethan thought Maya needed his permission to leave—but the documents in Daniel’s folder proved she had been preparing an exit long before the first slap ever landed.
