Chapter 4 - Richard Knew Before the WeddingThomas accelerated toward a private medical center in Brooklyn owned by one of Julian’s firms.

The SUVs stayed behind them.

Maya held Lily close while her daughter slept against her shoulder, exhausted by crying.

“How did Richard find us?”

Thomas glanced at the tracking display.

“He may have put a location tag in your luggage.”

Maya searched the suitcase and found a small black disc sewn beneath the lining.

Her hands turned cold.

Richard had prepared for her escape.

Not tonight.

Long before tonight.

At the medical center, security locked the underground entrance behind them. Julian waited in a private examination room with two attorneys and an older woman wearing a white laboratory coat.

He looked at Maya as though he were seeing a ghost.

“You have Arabella’s eyes.”

Maya remained near the door.

“Did you send those messages?”

“Yes.”

“You said the ring was buried with your sister.”

“It was supposed to be.”

Julian explained that Arabella Sterling disappeared during a succession conflict inside Sterling Dominion, a multinational logistics and private-equity empire founded by their father.

Arabella controlled forty-one percent of the voting trust.

After she vanished, those shares were placed in protected suspension until either her death was conclusively established or her biological child was found.

Without Maya, no branch of the family could fully control the company.

“What is Aurelia?” Maya asked.

Julian glanced toward the attorneys.

“A dormant trust containing assets your mother removed from the family company shortly before she disappeared.”

“How much?”

“Currently estimated at 3.8 billion dollars.”

Maya laughed from shock.

The number was too large to enter reality.

“I have been serving drinks at a hotel.”

Julian’s face softened.

“That may have been the only reason you stayed alive.”

The laboratory specialist requested a DNA sample. Maya agreed only after her own attorney—arranged independently through Nora—reviewed the consent documents.

While they waited, Julian examined the ring.

The film reference unlocked an encrypted letter Arabella had deposited with a Swiss trust office.

The letter contained one warning:

If Maya is found through the ring, do not trust the man who brings her to the family.

Everyone looked at Thomas.

He stepped back, stunned.

“That isn’t me.”

Julian’s expression turned hard.

“No. You didn’t bring her to us.”

Richard did.

The birthday video had already gone viral. But metadata showed Vanessa’s account had uploaded an earlier private copy to an encrypted address twelve minutes before posting it publicly.

The recipient was Sterling Dominion’s deputy chairman, Conrad Sterling—Julian’s older brother.

Richard’s contact with Conrad began three years earlier.

Six months before he met Maya.

The marriage had not been chance.

Richard had been introduced to her through a restaurant guest who worked for a Sterling subsidiary. He charmed her, isolated her, and quietly reported whether she possessed anything connected to her mother.

For years he found nothing.

Then he saw the orchid ring.

Maya remembered the night.

They had been married only two months when Richard found her wearing it after a shower.

He became unusually affectionate.

Asked where it came from.

Insisted it was too beautiful to hide.

She thought he loved seeing part of her past.

He had been confirming his target.

The birthday humiliation was not random either.

Richard wanted Maya to leave the house carrying the ring so Conrad’s people could intercept her away from witnesses.

But Julian’s presence changed the plan.

The laboratory door opened.

The specialist held a sealed result packet.

“You are Arabella Sterling’s biological daughter,” she said.

Maya felt the room tilt.

Before anyone could speak, alarms sounded beneath the building.

Security reported an intrusion attempt at the underground records floor.

Then the lights went out.

In the darkness, Lily screamed.

A man’s voice came through the emergency speaker.

May you like

Richard.

“Maya, give us the ring, and you can keep the child.”
