Chapter 6 - The Witness Who Finally Spoke

Rebecca asked to see me two days later.

At first, I refused.

She had been in the room.

She had watched.

Part of me wanted every silent witness erased from my future.

Then Nora told me Rebecca had given a full statement and surrendered messages Margaret sent before the dinner.

I agreed to a brief meeting.

Rebecca entered the hospital room wearing the same pink top from that night. She looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

I did not answer.

She sat only after asking permission.

“Margaret told me you were unstable,” she continued. “She said Brandon was afraid of you.”

“You watched him burn me.”

Her face crumpled.

“I froze.”

“That didn’t help me.”

“I know.”

There was nothing comforting to say.

So I said nothing.

Rebecca opened her phone and showed Nora a message thread.

The screens remained blurred from my angle, but Nora summarized what they contained.

Margaret had invited Rebecca to dinner because she wanted another relative present.

Before the meal, she sent:

Claire may make a scene tonight. Watch how she behaves.

Later:

If she becomes aggressive, remember Brandon was defending himself.

Margaret had recruited a witness before the assault.

She expected Rebecca to support their story.

But she made one mistake.

She assumed family loyalty would survive the sight of real violence.

Rebecca had spent the first seconds frozen.

Then the police entered.

Then Brandon ordered her not to speak.

That command made her understand she was not being asked to remember the truth.

She was being asked to join the lie.

“I should have helped sooner,” Rebecca said.

“Yes.”

“I’ll testify.”

“That doesn’t erase it.”

“I know.”

For the first time in my life, I did not soften the truth to make another person feel better.

Rebecca nodded through tears.

Then she placed a small object on the table.

A memory card.

Margaret had hidden it inside her handbag after police entered.

Rebecca saw her remove it from the home security hub and later took it while Margaret was being questioned.

The card contained backups from another camera.

Brandon had installed it months earlier to monitor me.

He believed it recorded only my movements.

But its angle included the dining area and part of the living room.

It showed earlier incidents.

Brandon blocking the exit.

Margaret taking my car keys.

William standing in the doorway while Brandon forced me back into the house.

The family had created their own evidence.

Not to protect me.

May you like

To control me.

And Rebecca had finally decided silence would no longer make her innocent.
