Chapter 13 - Arthur’s final secret

Independent testing followed.

Not at Marco’s laboratory.

Not through Arthur.

Through accredited facilities selected with legal oversight.

The results took time.

During that period, I filed for divorce.

Quietly.

Properly.

Marco moved out voluntarily after counsel became involved.

The mansion remained under my LLC.

The attempted share transfer was frozen.

My company’s board established an independent committee to investigate unauthorized access.

Valerie was no longer welcome anywhere near Bennett & Vale.

Authorities received relevant evidence regarding suspected forgery and unauthorized access.

I did not declare anyone guilty.

That was not my job.

My job was protecting Leo and myself.

Then the genetic results arrived.

The first finding supported what we already suspected.

Marco was not Leo’s biological father.

Evidence was consistent with Adrian being the likely biological source, subject to the limitations of available comparative samples.

I cried.

Not because Leo changed.

Because adults had hidden his truth.

Then came the second result.

Valerie was not Arthur’s biological daughter.

She stared at the report.

“No.”

Her entire identity had been built around that belief.

“My mother told me.”

Margaret looked at Arthur.

“Then who was Diana sleeping with?”

Arthur refused to answer.

Until the third result.

Valerie shared a close biological relationship with the Vance family.

Just not through Arthur.

The most likely explanation pointed toward Arthur’s brother.

A man named Charles Vance.

Valerie’s mother had lied too.

Maybe to protect someone.

Maybe for money.

Maybe because family secrets reproduce themselves when nobody has the courage to stop them.

But Arthur’s thirty-year-old secret was something different.

He had discovered Charles’s relationship with Diana.

Then paid Diana to disappear because Charles was married and the scandal threatened a major business merger.

Arthur had spent decades controlling people through money.

Diana.

Valerie.

Clinic employees.

Even his own family.

Margaret finally understood.

“You didn’t protect us.”

Arthur said nothing.

“You protected your reputation.”

That was the pattern connecting everything.

Not one mastermind.

Not one impossible conspiracy.

A family culture built around hiding anything inconvenient.

And Valerie had learned that culture perfectly.

Then Marco asked me something I never expected.

“Can I still be Leo’s father?”

I stared at him.

Biology was not the only issue.

He had raised Leo for five years.

Leo loved him.

But Marco had also weaponized the boy’s identity, shoved me publicly, cheated, and participated in a scheme targeting my company.

“You can start,” I said, “by becoming someone he deserves to call Dad.”

For once, Marco had nothing to say.
