Chapter 4 - They Came Straight from the Cruise

My parents should not have known I was still at the hospital.
I had gone back that morning because the incision had become inflamed and my temperature was rising. The doctor wanted me observed for several hours while they adjusted my medication.
Only James, Melissa, and the hospital knew.
Yet shortly after noon, Patricia entered my room carrying a beach bag.
Her blonde hair was still damp.
A white cover-up hung over the swimsuit she had worn in the vacation photographs.
Vanessa followed in a blue cover-up and sandals, brown hair wet against her shoulders.
Robert came last.
Gray hair uncombed.
Plaid shirt wrinkled.
Anger already waiting on his face.
They looked absurd beneath the harsh fluorescent lights—three people still dressed for a luxury cruise standing inside a sterile hospital room beside a mother recovering from surgery.
My son slept in my arms.
I pulled him closer.
Patricia looked at the IV line, the hospital gown, and my pale face.
She did not ask whether I was all right.
“This has gone far enough,” she said.
Vanessa dropped her beach bag onto a chair.
“You froze the card.”
“It was my card.”
Dad stepped closer.
“We had permission.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“You gave me access years ago.”
“To one savings account when I was in college. That authority was revoked.”
His expression sharpened.
“You don’t talk to me like I’m a criminal.”
I looked at the phone resting beside me.
Melissa had advised me to keep the line open and recording.
Two uniformed officers waited outside the room after hospital security received notice of a possible financial-abuse confrontation.
My family did not know that yet.
Patricia folded her arms.
“We came directly from the port because you decided to humiliate us.”
“I was in the hospital asking for help while you were on vacation.”
“You chose to have a baby,” she replied.
The cruelty was so casual it almost passed through me without impact.
Vanessa glanced at the bassinet.
“You always make everything dramatic.”
I looked at her.
“Did you forge my signature on the trust amendment?”
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Robert moved closer to the bed.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know Grandma’s house proceeds went into Mitchell Coastal Holdings.”
Silence.
Patricia’s eyes shifted toward Dad.
Vanessa looked at the door.
Robert lunged toward me.
Not at my body.
May you like
At the phone in my hand.
That was the moment the room exploded.
