Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT MY DAUGHTER CLAIMED MY THRONE

The first thing Vanessa did when I began to suffocate was smile.

The second was pour champagne over my face.

Cold liquid ran through my hair as I dropped to my knees on the marble floor of the Hawthorne Country Club. Above me, crystal chandeliers dissolved into streaks of white light.

My throat tightened.

Every breath came out as a thin, desperate wheeze.

“Someone call a doctor!” a woman shouted.

“No,” Vanessa said.

My daughter stepped between me and three hundred guests as though protecting them from the embarrassment of watching me collapse.

Her silver gown glittered beneath the chandeliers. Diamonds shone at her throat. She looked exactly like the future chief executive she had spent a decade pretending to deserve.

Then she crouched and pinned my wrists against my ribs.

“Die quickly, you embarrassing peasant,” she whispered. “The CEO seat is mine.”

Twelve directors watched from the front tables.

None moved.

Minutes earlier, they had applauded Chairman Roland Pike as he announced an “urgent leadership transition” at Merrick Global—the logistics company I had built from a rented warehouse into a four-billion-dollar empire.

Roland had raised his glass and declared, “Evelyn’s time has passed.”

Vanessa had called me an outdated founder who confused sacrifice with leadership.

They mocked my plain black dress.

They laughed when she said the company needed someone born for modern power.

Now they watched her murder me with the same polite silence they used during hostile board votes.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“The shellfish oil was in the canapé glaze,” she said. “You never even tasted it.”

My eyes watered.

Not from surprise.

From confirmation.

For six months, I had suspected Vanessa and several directors were draining Merrick Global through invented consulting contracts, inflated acquisitions, and shipping partnerships that existed only on paper.

For three weeks, independent investigators had been tracing the money.

For two days, I had known Vanessa intended to trigger my severe allergy at the gala.

And forty minutes before entering the ballroom, I had activated a slow-release emergency medication patch beneath my dress under medical supervision.

The reaction was real.

So was the fear.

But I was not dying.

I only needed Vanessa to believe I was.

She stood and addressed the room.

“My mother has suffered a tragic medical emergency. Security protocol requires everyone to remain inside.”

Roland reached beneath the stage and pressed a concealed switch.

Heavy bolts slammed into the ballroom doors.

A low hiss began inside the ceiling vents.

Guests looked upward.

Several directors covered their mouths.

Vanessa smiled at them.

That was when I understood her final betrayal.

She had never intended to inherit Merrick Global with the board.

She intended to eliminate every person who could expose how she stole it.

I placed one hand against the floor and slowly stood.

Vanessa’s victorious expression vanished.

I smoothed the wet fabric of my black dress and looked around the locked ballroom.

“You should not have sealed the doors,” I said.

She backed away.

“Why?”

May you like

“Because you just locked yourselves inside my investigation.”

Cliffhanger: Vanessa believed the vents were filling the ballroom with poison—but the substance released above us had been switched hours earlier by someone she trusted completely.
