Chapter 5 - The confession my husband left twenty years ago

James’s recording lasted forty-three minutes.

I watched all of it.

Richard tried not to.

There is something uniquely terrifying about hearing a dead man describe the person you became.

James explained that Richard joined Blackthorn Pharmaceuticals as an external consultant before Claire was born.

He was charming.

Hungry.

Always talking about “unlocking value.”

At first, James liked him.

Then unusual invoices appeared.

Richard was paying outside labs for unauthorized side studies.

He believed the venom-derived compounds could be patented privately before the company understood their value.

When James confronted him, Richard claimed he was only accelerating innovation.

James suspended the research.

Richard threatened to reveal incomplete safety concerns publicly unless James gave him a private ownership stake.

James refused.

Then came the part I never knew.

Richard forged James’s signature on two licensing applications.

James discovered it.

He planned to report him.

Three days later, James suffered the cardiac event that eventually killed him.

I looked at Richard.

He shouted immediately.

“I did not kill James.”

No one had accused him of that.

Agent Cross’s voice came through the speaker.

“Mrs. Blackthorn, do not infer cause from timing.”

I appreciated the correction.

Suspicion was not evidence.

James had longstanding cardiac disease.

The recording did not prove Richard caused his death.

What it proved was that James expected financial and intellectual-property fraud to continue.

So he placed barriers throughout the estate structure.

The Blackthorn Foundation could not sell Project Six patents without approval from three independent trustees.

One trustee was Samuel.

Another was my attorney at the time.

The third was supposed to be me.

Richard spent years trying to remove those barriers indirectly.

Samuel’s disappearance solved one.

My forged will was meant to solve another.

The third had already been compromised.

My old attorney, Charles Wynn, died four years earlier.

His successor transferred trustee authority to someone else.

A woman named Evelyn Hart.

I knew the name.

Richard did too.

Claire looked between us.

“Who is she?”

My stomach dropped.

“Your godmother.”

Evelyn had been my closest friend after James died.

She attended Claire’s school plays.

Stayed with us during holidays.

Helped me survive the first year of widowhood.

Then, seven years ago, we drifted apart.

I thought life had done what life does.

People move.

Priorities change.

Now Samuel showed us records proving Evelyn had been receiving consulting payments from Richard’s shell companies for almost a decade.

Claire whispered:

“Was anyone real?”

I wanted to answer yes.

But that night, the honest answer felt more complicated.

Richard finally stopped pretending.

“You all think this is about greed.”

“What is it about?” I asked.

“Being erased.”

He looked toward James on the frozen monitor.

“He built everything. Everyone admired him. You inherited the empire. Claire inherited the name. What did I get?”

“You got a career.”

“From scraps.”

“You got trust.”

“Trust doesn’t compound.”

There it was.

Not poverty.

Not desperation.

Resentment.

He believed proximity to wealth created ownership.

He had spent twenty years converting envy into entitlement.

Claire sat beside me.

For the first time since the trap began, her hands shook openly.

I covered them with mine.

Then Agent Cross entered the library through the now-unsealed security door.

Two medical responders followed and checked me immediately.

No dramatic raid.

No shouting.

Richard was kept separated while investigators preserved evidence and arranged the next steps.

Before Agent Cross could speak, another alarm sounded.

Not security.

Fire suppression.

Smoke had been detected in the south archive.

Someone elsewhere in the mansion had attempted to destroy James’s records.

Richard smiled.

“You really thought I came alone?”

Agent Cross looked toward the hallway.

“Who else is here?”

Richard said nothing.

Claire’s face changed.

“Evelyn.”

May you like

Then every light in the east wing went dark.

Cliffhanger: Richard was trapped in the library—but his secret partner was still inside Blackthorn Hall, destroying the only records capable of proving how the scheme began.
