Chapter 12 - My Own Name

Three months later, I was back at work.
Not “returning to throne.”
Sitting in conference room arguing about storm-water requirements.
Perfect.
Franklin Urban extended contract to full-time senior planning role after evaluating actual performance.
No nepotism.
I was rusty but good.
I updated software skills.
Took continuing education.
Asked younger colleagues questions.
Some knew my family name.
Most cared whether report was late.
Healthy.
Then apartment became permanent.
I bought nothing yet.
Rented.
One bedroom.
Ocean glimpse if fog kind.
I loved it.
Dad’s estate gave me financial security, but I wanted salary again.
Not because wealth invalid.
Because work reminded me I could produce something that wasn’t family money.
Then divorce mediation.
Edwin fought.
He claimed marital reconciliation possible.
I declined.
California no-fault meant he could not prevent divorce indefinitely.
Financial disputes:
personal property.
marital earnings.
trust assets largely separate under structure.
Crestview-related liabilities.
use of my identity.
Lawyers worked.
No dramatic one-day hearing.
Then Edwin’s criminal matters.
Prosecutors pursued strongest supported allegations related to false documents, identity misuse, corporate conduct, and foyer confinement. Some resolved civil/regulatory; some criminal.
Not every bad act fit criminal statute.
Important.
Annika entered agreement requiring restitution and cooperation on identity-related misconduct.
Beverly faced consequences for stolen property participation/notary scheme? Her role less direct.
Patricia Wells lost notary commission and faced legal sanctions.
Lauren dealt with repayment/compliance.
Victor with privacy violations.
Edwin faced most severe financial/corporate exposure because evidence tied him to direction and benefit.
Then company shareholders voted.
Edwin removed from board after sufficient votes under corporate governance.
He retained minority/equity interest but no control.
Crestview refinanced without Stanford personal guarantees over next year.
That mattered.
Dad’s money stopped being permanent life support.
Company became healthier.
Employees kept jobs.
Acting CEO Elena Park? Use new name. Maya Torres maybe. Let's say COO Rachel Kim became CEO.
Rachel Kim had worked Crestview fifteen years and knew operations.
She implemented:
related-party disclosure.
independent procurement.
whistleblower.
audit controls.
Crestview survived founder myth.
Then one day she called me.
“Would you consider board seat?”
“No.”
Immediate.
She laughed.
“That quick?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I’m building different career.”
“Fair.”
No need own everyone who hurt you.
Stanford Strategic retained passive interest, represented independently.
I stayed out.
Then Brutus.
Edwin lost Bel Air house lease after trust entity terminated at proper contractual date? Could not instant evict. House owned by Stanford holding. Lease arrangement reviewed. Edwin had occupancy rights through company? Eventually ended.
What happened to dog?
I worried.
Luis contacted.
Edwin surrendered Brutus during move because new apartment restricted breed/size.
Luis took him temporarily.
“Do you want meet?”
Fear surged.
Then I said yes.
At training field, Brutus approached slowly.
Without Edwin, no growl.
Just huge animal with ridiculous tongue.
Luis kept leash.
I offered hand after guidance.
Brutus sniffed.
Then sat.
I cried.
Not because dog.
Because fear had been assigned wrong object.
Edwin weaponized him.
The dog had not chosen.
I did not adopt Brutus—that would be too neat.
Luis found experienced rural family.
Good.
Then Maria, former housekeeper intimidated years earlier, contacted through lawyer.
She confirmed Edwin used dog and NDAs to control staff.
Her NDA could not lawfully prevent reporting certain misconduct? Depending. Counsel handled.
She had one more detail:
Beverly once told staff,
“Camila’s father won’t live forever.”
Cruel.
Not murder.
No need.
Then Dad’s heart attack medical review.
I asked Wayne:
“Did Edwin have anything to do with Dad dying?”
There was no evidence.
Dad had documented cardiac disease.
Death sudden but medically consistent.
No poisoning twist.
No secret murder.
Grief deserved truth, not convenient villainy.
That answer helped.
Because I could hate what Edwin did without making him responsible for everything painful.
Then one afternoon I received divorce decree date.
It would finalize after statutory process.
I expected triumph.
Instead I cried.
Five years mattered.
Even bad marriage contained mornings, jokes, vacations, tenderness.
Edwin once stayed beside me through pneumonia.
Made Dad laugh twice.
Danced with me in kitchen.
None of that erased later.
Later did not erase existence.
Human beings are difficult to bury cleanly.
Then I wrote him one letter through attorneys.
Not reconciliation.
Not accusation.
Edwin,
I believe you loved me in ways you understood.
I also believe you treated access to me as something you owned.
Those two things can both be true.
I am not returning.
No answer required.
Camila.
I sent.
Then went to work.
My name appeared on first major planning report in six years:
Camila Stanford.
Not Mercer.
I stared longer than necessary.
My own name.
My own work.
No fake invoice.
May you like
No forged LLC.
Mine.
