Chapter 1 - The laughter behind the maternity-room door

I arrived at Lakeside Medical Center carrying balloons, flowers, and a tiny stuffed bear.

My sister Lauren had given birth the night before.

For once, I wanted the morning to be simple.

No competition.

No old resentments.

No family drama.

Just two sisters, a new baby, and maybe the beginning of something better between us.

I was almost at Lauren’s room when I heard my husband’s voice.

“She doesn’t suspect a thing.”

I stopped.

Ryan laughed softly from behind the partly open maternity-room door.

“At least she’s been useful for money.”

For several seconds, my brain refused to understand the sentence.

Ryan was supposed to be at work.

He had kissed my forehead that morning and told me he had an investor breakfast.

Then my mother spoke.

“You two deserve to be happy. Madison has always been a disappointment.”

My fingers tightened around the gift bag.

Elaine Brooks had spent my entire childhood comparing me with Lauren.

Lauren was warmer.

Lauren was prettier.

Lauren needed more.

I was the daughter expected to perform, achieve, pay, and forgive.

Still, hearing my mother say it so casually felt like someone opening an old wound with a clean knife.

Then Lauren laughed.

“Thanks, Mom. Ryan and I are going to make this work.”

I stopped breathing.

Ryan and Lauren.

No.

There had to be another explanation.

Then Ryan said:

“The baby looks just like me. Honestly, we don’t even need a DNA test.”

The stuffed bear slipped halfway out of the bag.

I caught it before it hit the floor.

Inside the room, my mother sounded pleased.

“I always knew you belonged together.”

Lauren’s voice softened.

“This is our family now.”

My entire marriage rearranged itself in seconds.

The fertility treatments Ryan and I had paid for.

The unexplained transfers from our joint savings.

The nights he was “working late.”

Lauren defending him every time we argued.

My mother telling me I was becoming paranoid whenever I questioned money.

I leaned against the wall.

“I’ve been paying for this,” I whispered.

Not just financially.

I had paid with years.

Trust.

Embarrassment.

And perhaps with something even worse.

Six months earlier, I had quietly consulted attorney Daniel Harper after discovering recurring transfers I could not explain.

I never authorized an investigation because I was afraid of what I might find.

Now I pulled out my phone.

Daniel answered on the second ring.

“Mrs. Brooks?”

“Don’t cancel anything.”

Silence.

Then:

“Did you finally get proof?”

I looked at the cracked hospital door.

“Yes.”

Footsteps suddenly sounded behind me.

Fast.

Coming directly toward me.

I turned.

A nurse stopped short when she saw the flowers in my hands.

“Mrs. Brooks?”

“Yes?”

Her face changed.

“I think you need to come with me.”

“Why?”

She looked toward Lauren’s room, then back at me.

May you like

“Because there’s something about that baby you were never supposed to see.”

Cliffhanger: The affair was real—but a confidential hospital record suggested Lauren’s newborn was connected to Madison in a way even Ryan did not understand.
