Chapter 1 - The Family Reset

My name is Daniel Mercer.

I was thirty-eight when my parents invited my nine-year-old son, Noah, and me to spend four days in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains.

My mother called it a “family reset weekend.”

I should have questioned those words.

Eighteen months earlier, my wife, Claire, had died after a sudden illness.

Since then, Noah and I had been surviving rather than living.

My family didn’t understand grief.

My older sister Melissa told me I had become “too sensitive.”

My father, Richard, preferred something harsher.

“You’ve got a boy watching you. Start acting like a man again.”

My mother Elaine rarely defended me.

Still, when she suggested the mountain trip, I accepted.

For Noah.

We arrived Friday afternoon.

There were two large portable hunting cabins in a clearing surrounded by pine trees.

Three vehicles.

Coolers overflowing with food.

Camping equipment everywhere.

My parents were there.

Melissa.

Her husband Troy.

Their daughters, fourteen-year-old Hannah and eleven-year-old Sophie.

Noah seemed happier than I’d seen him in months.

That alone made the trip worthwhile.

Saturday morning, he pointed toward a creek we’d passed on the drive in.

“Can we go find it?”

“Sure.”

I told everyone we’d be gone less than an hour.

Melissa stood beside the camp stove making pancakes.

Troy was chopping firewood.

Mom was sorting groceries.

Dad sat on the porch drinking coffee.

“Don’t get lost,” he called.

I waved.

Noah and I disappeared into the trees.

We found the creek twenty minutes later.

Noah collected stones.

We examined animal tracks.

For ninety minutes, I felt almost normal again.

Then we walked back.

I knew something was wrong before we reached the clearing.

No voices.

No wood splitting.

No generator.

Nothing.

We stepped through the trees.

Noah stopped.

“Dad?”

Everything was gone.

The cabins.

Cars.

Food.

Blankets.

Coolers.

Everything.

Deep tire marks crossed the clearing.

I ran from one side to the other.

“MOM!”

Nothing.

“DAD!”

Silence.

“MELISSA!”

No answer.

Then Noah pointed.

“Dad… look.”

An envelope had been nailed to a pine tree.

My name was written across it.

In my mother’s handwriting.

Inside was a single page.

Daniel,

This had to happen. Don’t come looking for us. Noah is your responsibility now. You have taken enough from this family. We are done paying for your mistakes.

My hands began shaking.

Noah read my face.

“They left us?”

I crushed the paper in my fist.

Then I looked at the empty road.

No car.

No food.

No water.

No phone signal.

Nothing.

Someone hadn’t simply abandoned us.

They had carefully removed every object we could have used to survive.

And suddenly I understood something terrifying.

May you like

This hadn’t been spontaneous.

My family had planned it.
