Chapter 1 - The afternoon home stopped feeling like home

At exactly 5:42 p.m., I opened the side gate carrying groceries and found my husband in our pool with Brooke from next door.

For one second, nothing moved except the water.

Ethan’s hands flew away from her waist.

Brooke sank lower until only her shoulders and bright red lipstick remained above the surface.

I knew that lipstick.

She had left the same shade on a coffee mug in my kitchen the week before.

The day she came to “borrow sugar.”

Again.

“Lauren…”

Ethan said my name like he still believed tone could control what happened next.

Then he gave me the sentence that finished whatever love remained.

“Please… don’t make a scene.”

I looked toward the patio.

His pants were folded neatly over a chair.

Belt.

Wallet.

Phone.

Truck keys.

Brooke’s floral sundress lay beside them.

Her phone lit up.

Several missed calls.

One name appeared before the screen dimmed.

Ryan.

Her husband.

Brooke’s voice trembled.

“We can explain.”

My eyes moved to the wet footprints leading from my back door to the pool.

“You already have.”

Ethan grabbed the edge.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

That was when I stopped feeling devastated.

Not because the betrayal hurt less.

Because he still thought the real problem was my reaction.

So I began collecting their clothes.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Brooke stared at me.

“What are you doing?”

“Cleaning up.”

I folded Ethan’s shirt over my arm.

Then Brooke’s dress.

Then her sandals.

Ethan’s face tightened.

“Lauren, put those down.”

Instead, I walked toward the security panel beside the house.

Months earlier, I insisted we install exterior cameras and an emergency neighborhood alarm after several break-ins nearby.

Ethan mocked me for it.

“You worry too much.”

Now I pressed the alarm.

The siren exploded.

Dogs started barking.

Garage doors opened.

Neighbors stepped outside.

Curtains moved.

Faces appeared above fences.

Ethan shouted:

“TURN IT OFF!”

I looked at him.

“You brought your affair into my home.”

Then I picked up his truck key fob.

“Why should I hide it for you?”

I dropped it into the deep end.

The water swallowed it.

Brooke covered her mouth.

Then tires stopped hard in my driveway.

A car door slammed.

Brooke slowly turned toward the gate.

Her husband’s black SUV was outside.

And from the look on her face, Ryan was not supposed to know where she was.

Cliffhanger: Ryan had arrived expecting to confront Brooke—but the phone in Lauren’s hand contained messages proving Ethan had been hiding something from both spouses.
