Chapter 6 - THE SOLDIER WHO LOWERED HIS EYESKyle entered only after security checked him.

He placed the medical cooler on my dining-room table and raised both hands.
“I’m not here for the child.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To keep Dr. Hale from reaching him.”
Kyle had helped Mark and Natalie.
He admitted it.
He issued false visitor clearances, altered gate instructions, and moved documents through secure channels.
But he claimed he did so because Mark told him Liam faced an imminent kidnapping threat from the Brooks family.
Mark presented himself as a father trapped between powerful families.
Kyle believed he was protecting a child.
Then he overheard Natalie discussing the insurance payout.
That was when he realized the threat and the protectors were the same people.
“Why didn’t you report it?”
“I did.”
“To whom?”
“General Andrew Reynolds.”
My brother knew Kyle suspected the plan.
Andrew ordered him to continue cooperating so military investigators could map the entire network.
Kyle became an informant.
That explained why he looked guilty at the gate.
He was following Andrew’s restriction while also repeating Mark’s cruel wording to preserve his cover.
“You humiliated Liam to maintain an operation.”
His face tightened.
“Yes, ma’am.”
He did not ask forgiveness.
That mattered.
“What is inside the cooler?”
“David Brooks’s stored samples and the original test from Liam’s birth.”
Kyle opened a sealed container under video documentation.
The laboratory report confirmed David Brooks was not Liam’s biological father.
I stared at the result.
Every scheme built around the Brooks inheritance suddenly fractured.
“Then whose sample was used?”
Kyle handed me the birth certificate.
Not the public copy.
The original hospital record.
The donor field contained a code linked to Reynolds Medical Archive.
My family.
James searched it.
The code belonged to my late father, Henry Reynolds.
I felt physically ill.
“That’s impossible.”
My father had stored genetic material during cancer treatment years before his death.
The samples were supposed to be destroyed.
Charles Wynn redirected them.
Evelyn and Thomas intended to create a child biologically connected to the Reynolds founder, allowing stronger control over my shares even if I resisted.
But why claim David Brooks was the donor?
Because they needed Liam to appear connected to both fortunes.
The plan involved falsifying whichever lineage produced the greatest leverage at each stage.
To Reynolds Group, Liam would be Henry’s biological descendant.
To the Brooks trust, he would be David’s.
To the Collins family, Mark would remain legal father.
Three identities.
One child.
No consent.
Kyle continued.
Dr. Hale discovered the samples did not match the false Brooks certification. He tried to demand more money before completing a new test.
Natalie refused.
He fled with the evidence.
Kyle followed him, recovered the cooler after a vehicle accident, and came directly to me.
“Where is Dr. Hale?”
“Alive. In custody.”
“And the pickup request for Liam?”
“Sent by Evelyn using a cloned authorization.”
Andrew’s contingency plan was real, but it had been created after he learned about the insurance policy. He intended a secure relocation only if there were an immediate threat.
He still should have told me.
But he had not planned to steal Liam.
He planned to protect him without trusting me enough to participate.
Another version of control.
I called Andrew.
“From now on, no one writes a plan involving my son without me.”
“You’re right.”
“Not ‘I was protecting you.’”
He exhaled.
“You’re right.”
Kyle revealed one final recording from Mark’s office.
Evelyn spoke:
Once Claire discovers Natalie, she’ll call Andrew. Andrew will activate military review. That gives Charles justification to invoke the conflict clause.
The gate incident had been engineered to trigger my family.
They wanted Andrew involved.
They wanted Reynolds Group to freeze contracts.
They wanted corporate instability.
Then Charles could use the forged emergency amendment to transfer temporary control to Thomas Brooks.
The affair was bait.
The soup.
The gate.
The soldier’s confession.
My angry call.
Every part anticipated.
Except the thermos.
The moment I kicked it and walked away, a local reporter outside the gate captured video. The clip spread through military-family social networks.
Public attention arrived too early.
The conspirators lost control of timing.
My humiliation disrupted their larger plan.
Then James called.
Charles Wynn had agreed to cooperate.
He identified the person who originally designed the insurance structure and genetic fraud.
Not Evelyn.
Not Thomas.
My father.
Henry Reynolds.
Before his death, he had created a secret succession initiative called Project Heirloom.
The original version involved voluntary family planning and protected trusts.
But Charles claimed my father later approved more aggressive measures after learning he was dying.
I did not believe it.
Then James sent a video recorded by my father fifteen years earlier.
Henry Reynolds looked directly into the camera and said:
If Claire refuses the succession plan, proceed without informing her. The company must survive the preferences of one child.

My father had begun the conspiracy.
Cliffhanger: The people betraying me had corrupted my father’s plan—but the final recording proved the man whose legacy I had protected may have been the first person willing to sacrifice my consent for the family empire.
