Chapter 8 - The monster did not get to become my rescuer

Dominic wanted Henry Mercer destroyed.
I could see it in the way he read the emails.
Not metaphorically.
Not legally.
Destroyed.
That frightened me.
Because men who see themselves as protectors can become dangerous quickly once righteousness gives them permission.
“No.”
Dominic looked up.
We were meeting in Naomi’s office, neutral ground.
“What?”
“You don’t get to do anything to him for me.”
His expression cooled.
“Mercer used my organization.”
“That is your issue.”
“He helped your father—”
“That is mine.”
Silence.
Naomi watched both of us without interfering.
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“You think I’m going to make this worse.”
“I think you are used to solving problems with fear.”
“That works.”
“So did my father’s methods.”
The room went very still.
I expected anger.
Instead, Dominic leaned back.
The comparison hurt him.
Good.
It was supposed to.
After a long silence:
“What do you want me to do?”
“Preserve records.”
“Done.”
“Turn over anything involving Harold, Mercer, or your lending managers to my attorney.”
“That could expose me.”
“Yes.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You understand what you’re asking.”
“I do.”
“And if I refuse?”
“Then stop telling me you’re different from my father.”
Naomi looked down, perhaps hiding an expression.
Dominic stared at me for so long I could hear the air-conditioning vent above us.
Then he said:
“Give me twenty-four hours.”
It took seventeen.
Dominic returned with Alessandra and three encrypted drives.
Transaction ledgers.
Messages.
Internal loan approvals.
Security records.
Contacts between Mercer-linked companies and compromised Valletti employees.
Not everything his organization had ever done.
But everything relevant to my case—and enough that Alessandra had already arranged for independent criminal counsel.
Dominic was not becoming innocent.
He was accepting that helping me might cost him.
That mattered more.
The records showed Henry Mercer had used a financier named Elias Crane to route money through Valletti lending entities.
Crane had bribed Dominic’s senior manager, Anthony Ricci.
Ricci was the man who fled to the Bahamas.
Harold believed he owed Dominic because the paperwork carried Valletti company names.
Mercer counted on that confusion.
Then the deeper financial architecture emerged.
Harold had borrowed $2.7 million over four years.
Some through legitimate banks.
Some through Mercer fronts.
Some through corrupted Valletti channels.
Most of the money had not gone to gambling, as he told me.
That surprised me.
Only about four hundred thousand could be tied to gambling losses.
The rest went into Caldwell Marine.
Why?
His company had been failing for years.
Harold was borrowing to keep it alive.
Pay employees.
Cover taxes.
Hide bad contracts.
Preserve the appearance that the Caldwell name still meant something.
That did not excuse him.
It made him more understandable and somehow more pathetic.
He abused me partly because cruelty was natural to him.
But the financial scheme came from something else too:
Terror of public failure.
Mercer knew it.
He offered Harold a path.
Control Serena.
Deliver the Hart parcels.
Keep Caldwell Marine alive.
Harold chose the company.
Again and again.
Over me.
Then Naomi discovered what Mercer intended to build on the waterfront land.
Not just luxury condos.
A private marina connected to a proposed customs and logistics facility.
Dominic stared at the map.
“That gives him access to a shipping corridor.”
Naomi looked at him.
“Legitimate?”
“Mostly.”
“Mostly is not reassuring.”
Dominic pointed to a narrow strip between the Hart parcels.
“The site connects directly to a channel used by several freight operators.”
Including his own.
Mercer was not only targeting my inheritance for real-estate value.
The parcels could give him strategic leverage over Dominic’s shipping interests.
Suddenly Harold bringing me to Dominic looked even less accidental.
Mercer may have expected Dominic to react.
Maybe violently.
Maybe possessively.
Either way, conflict benefited him.
Then Alessandra found a message from Mercer to Elias Crane:
If Valletti takes the girl, we have grounds to involve federal people without exposing the asset plan.
My blood ran cold.
I had been bait in two directions.
Against my father.
May you like
And against Dominic.
Cliffhanger: Mercer had expected Dominic to “take” Serena so he could use her disappearance to trigger federal scrutiny of Valletti—while quietly securing the waterfront property for himself.
