Chapter 3 - The Second Rope Beside the Fireplace

Mara did not remember falling.

She remembered Ryan’s arms.

That was all.

One second the rope was holding her upright. The next, gravity changed and someone caught her before the floor could.

Cole shouted.

Flashlights cut across the room.

The fireplace poker hit the rug.

A voice ordered him down.

Another voice ordered him not to move.

Ryan pulled Mara against his chest only long enough to confirm she was conscious before handing her to the medic team entering behind them.

His training fought his instincts with every breath.

He wanted to cross the room.

Wanted to ask Cole whether he understood whose sister he had terrorized.

Wanted to become the worst version of himself for thirty seconds.

Instead, Ryan stepped back.

Because rage would help Cole.

Procedure would help Mara.

Paramedics cut the remaining rope from her wrists, covered her with a blanket, and began checking both her condition and the baby’s.

Cole kept talking.

That was the strange part.

Not apologizing.

Explaining.

“She’s unstable.”

“She was hurting herself.”

“She asked me to restrain her.”

“She gets like this when she panics.”

Each sentence came faster as physical control disappeared.

Lena Morales said nothing except to advise him to stop talking.

Then one of the officers near the fireplace crouched.

“What’s this?”

A second length of nylon rope lay partly hidden behind a basket of logs.

Already cut to length.

Beside it was a roll of duct tape, a folded blanket, and an unopened bottle of water.

None of those objects were illegal individually.

Together, in context, they raised questions.

Mara was already being moved toward the ambulance when Lena asked whether anyone else was expected at the house.

Cole said no.

Then:

“This is being twisted.”

Lena looked at the second rope.

“Who was that for?”

Cole stopped talking.

That silence mattered more than his previous explanations.

At the hospital, Mara’s injuries were documented carefully without turning her body into spectacle. The medical team focused on stabilization, hydration, pain control, fetal monitoring, and preserving evidence only with her consent.

The baby’s heart rate was elevated at first.

Then gradually stabilized.

The obstetrician explained that they would continue monitoring because stress and trauma at that stage of pregnancy could create serious complications, but she refused to predict disaster before evidence supported it.

Mara appreciated that.

She had already lived too long around people who used certainty as a weapon.

Ryan sat outside the room.

He had blood on his sleeve—not Mara’s? Could be from rope abrasions, but let's avoid graphic. He had dust from attic insulation in his hair and a cut on his palm from the crawlspace.

Lena approached with two coffees.

He took one and did not drink it.

“What was the second rope for?”

“We don’t know.”

“Ask him.”

“He lawyered up.”

“Good.”

She watched him.

Ryan understood the look.

“You think I’m too close.”

“You are too close.”

“He’s my brother-in-law.”

“He’s the suspect in my case.”

Ryan leaned back against the wall and shut his eyes.

“I know.”

Lena softened.

“You did your job tonight.”

“I almost didn’t.”

“But you did.”

Then she told him something else.

The search of the room uncovered a small camera hidden inside a smoke detector.

Not connected to the home security system.

Local memory card.

No cloud account identified yet.

“What did it record?”

“We haven’t reviewed it.”

Ryan looked toward Mara’s hospital room.

Cole had spent months claiming Mara was volatile, confused, and unreliable.

If he installed a secret camera to document her, maybe he intended to manufacture more “proof.”

Or maybe the camera had captured the truth.

Then Lena added one final detail.

The device had not been installed recently.

Its memory card contained folders dating back more than eight months.

Before Mara told Ryan she was afraid.

Before the watch.

Before the warrant.

Cole had been recording the house almost from the beginning of the pregnancy.

Cliffhanger: Investigators discovered Cole had secretly recorded Mara for eight months—and the oldest files began just days after he learned she was pregnant.
