Chapter 7 - The wedding Camila had already decided to stop

The ballroom glittered beneath chandeliers.

White roses.

Gold chairs.

Political donors.

Diplomats.

Executives.

People who knew how to smile while calculating the value of everyone else in the room.

I wore white satin because it was the only formal dress in my closet that fit without alteration.

Celeste saw me near the entrance.

Her expression hardened.

“You’re still here.”

“Camila invited me.”

“She is too gracious.”

Then she leaned close.

“I don’t know what ridiculous claim you made yesterday, but Adrian says grief over your mother has destabilized you.”

There it was.

The same credibility story again.

I looked beyond her.

Rafael had entered.

Our eyes met.

He gave me one small nod.

Nothing public.

Nothing theatrical.

Celeste followed my gaze.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.

The ceremony began.

Camila walked alone toward Adrian.

He looked relieved.

He still believed the crisis around my identity could somehow be separated from his wedding.

The officiant began speaking.

Camila raised one hand.

“Before we continue, I need to ask Adrian something.”

His smile tightened.

“Camila.”

“You told me your previous marriage ended because Elena resented your success.”

He glanced toward me.

“This is not the time.”

“You told federal reviewers your financial disclosures were complete.”

A murmur moved through the room.

Two investigators quietly positioned themselves near the ballroom doors.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Your father is allowing this?”

Rafael answered from his seat.

“This is not my investigation.”

That destroyed Adrian’s preferred defense before he could use it.

No presidential vendetta.

No powerful father attacking his daughter’s fiancé.

Camila reached beneath the podium.

Pulled out a cream folder.

“This is mine.”

Inside were financial disclosures, corporate records, bank documents, and sworn statements already preserved by counsel.

Cole Strategic had billed multiple clients for overlapping research.

Not every invoice was fraudulent.

Enough appeared misleading to require investigation.

Then she opened another section.

Meridian Civic Partners payments.

Intermediaries.

The old joint account.

A company owned by Celeste.

C. Vale Advisory.

Payments received over eighteen months:

Approximately $340,000.

No meaningful payroll.

Almost no independent clients.

Adrian turned toward his mother.

“You told me those were subcontractor retainers.”

Celeste’s face went pale.

“You don’t understand.”

For the first time, Adrian looked betrayed rather than exposed.

His mother had apparently constructed her own layer.

Then one investigator approached Camila and whispered something.

She opened another document from Adrian’s tablet.

Serrano Family Integration.

The title alone changed her face.

Inside was a private planning memorandum.

Marriage benefits:

Donor-network proximity.

Policy credibility.

Security-vetted status.

Foundation introductions.

Long-term firm expansion.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Camila, that is scenario planning.”

“You called our marriage integration.”

“It was private.”

She looked at him.

“And private is where you stopped pretending.”

Rafael stood.

“You will not marry my daughter today.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t control her.”

Camila answered first.

“He doesn’t.”

She removed her ring.

Placed it on the evidence folder.

“I do.”

Then heavy ballroom doors closed.

Not locked to imprison guests indefinitely.

Temporarily secured while investigators preserved devices identified in the judicial authorization.

Panic moved through the room anyway.

Adrian finally looked toward me.

“This is you.”

“No,” I said.

“You did all of this.”

“You really do believe every woman’s decision is secretly about you.”

Then an investigator approached me.

“Dr. Vega, we need to discuss the dormant joint account.”

Adrian’s expression brightened.

A final weapon.

“Elena benefited too.”

The investigator showed me a transaction.

$96,000.

Donation to my hospital foundation.

My name attached.

I had never authorized it.

Adrian had placed me inside his paper trail.

Cliffhanger: Camila had ended the wedding and exposed Adrian’s strategy—but investigators then revealed a large payment tied directly to Elena’s hospital, giving Adrian his first apparent evidence that she had benefited too.
