Chapter 4 - Northstar connected people who were pretending not to be connected
Andrea refused to let Cassie call Northstar a fraud.
Not yet.
“That word is a conclusion,” she said. “We have transactions. We trace them.”
Cassie was beginning to understand that good evidence was less emotionally satisfying than accusation and far more useful.
Over eleven months, Northstar had received a little over one hundred thousand dollars from several sources connected to Tony: his business account, his personal account, and twice from the marital investment account Cassie shared with him.
Some transfers might have been legitimate consulting fees.
Tony owned Meridian Logistics, a regional freight company he had built from three trucks into a business with almost two hundred employees. Cassie knew Ryan had occasionally discussed investments with him. It was possible Northstar performed actual work.
Then Andrea found the company amendment.
A second manager had been added four months earlier.
M. Keller.
Meera’s legal surname before their parents married.
Cassie sat so still Andrea asked if she needed water.
“She told me she was freelancing.”
“She may have been.”
“For my husband’s best friend?”
“Possibly.”
Cassie laughed once, without humor.
“I feel stupid.”
Andrea leaned forward.
“No.”
Cassie looked at her.
“You were kept from information by people who benefited from your not having it. That is different from stupidity.”
Cassie would replay that sentence later.
That night she watched Tony and Meera in the kitchen.
Tony stood behind Meera while she cooked, one hand resting familiarly at her waist. Neither noticed Cassie observing from the hallway.
Ryan’s name entered the conversation.
“Did he send the revised deck?” Tony asked.
Meera nodded.
“He said tomorrow.”
“You tell him no more changes after this.”
“I will.”
Tony kissed her temple.
Cassie’s chest tightened.
He was discussing business with Meera openly now while still telling Cassie she “wouldn’t understand the numbers.”
Meera had access Cassie had never been offered.
That hurt differently from the affair.
It meant her exclusion had become structural.
Two evenings later Tony sprayed cologne and announced he was meeting a client.
Cassie waited until his car left.
Then Janet picked her up.
They followed him downtown, staying far enough behind that Tony never saw the vehicle.
At 8:19 p.m. he entered a hotel.
Thirteen minutes later Meera arrived in a red dress.
Cassie’s fingers shook when she raised the phone.
Janet touched her wrist.
“Only from here. Public space. Don’t follow them inside.”
They recorded Tony greeting Meera beneath the hotel lights, his hand sliding over her waist before he kissed her.
Then they waited.
Cassie expected the two-hour vigil to feel unbearable.
Instead it was strangely quiet.
Once betrayal becomes visible, the mind has less work to do.
When Tony and Meera finally emerged, Cassie recorded them again.
She thought that was the night’s final revelation.
It wasn’t.
Tony entered his car and drove away alone.
Meera remained beneath the hotel awning.
Five minutes later another vehicle pulled up.
Ryan stepped out.
Cassie’s body went cold.
He did not greet Meera like Tony’s friend collecting someone stranded.
Meera stepped directly into his arms.
Ryan kissed her forehead.
Then her mouth.
Janet whispered, “Cassie.”
“I know.”
“Keep recording.”
Meera climbed into Ryan’s car.
They drove away.
Cassie lowered the phone.
Her marriage had already been broken.
Now the shape of the betrayal changed completely.
Tony believed Meera had chosen him.
Ryan apparently believed the same.
And Northstar connected Meera financially to Ryan while Tony’s money flowed through it.
Cassie stared at the empty hotel entrance and realized the affair might not be the secret.

Cliffhanger: After spending the night with Tony, Meera left the hotel with Ryan—revealing that Tony’s “chosen woman” was secretly involved with the man handling money from Tony’s company.
