Chapter 11 - The Mother Behind the Singer

Evelyn’s house looked exactly as it always had.

White stone.

Black shutters.

Perfect hedges.

The place where she hosted Christmas brunch and called me sweetheart.

Federal investigators waited two streets away.

I did not go truly alone.

I was done confusing recklessness with courage.

Inside, Evelyn sat beside Margaret.

Alive.

Unrestrained.

Leo slept upstairs.

Christian stood by the fireplace.

Lawson sat near the window.

Sabrina was not there.

Gabriel wasn't either.

Every major lie in my life had gathered for tea.

“Sit,” Evelyn said.

“No.”

She almost smiled.

“I always liked that about you.”

“Liked what?”

“You were harder to train than Christian.”

Her son flinched.

There it was.

The central relationship.

Not mastermind and obedient puppet exactly.

Mother and son shaped into something mutually poisonous.

Evelyn had spent decades managing Christian as a product.

His clothes.

Music.

Relationships.

Scandals.

She found me because Hartwell rights could strengthen his empire.

Christian knew our first meeting was arranged.

He didn't initially know why.

Then he learned.

And stayed.

Because fame rewards people for converting discomfort into strategy.

“Did you order the attack?”

Evelyn looked at Christian.

“No.”

He answered:

“I did.”

No excuse.

Good.

“Did she know?”

“After.”

Evelyn said:

“I told him it was idiotic.”

Not monstrous.

Idiotic.

“Your fertility?”

Lawson finally spoke.

“I altered your treatment.”

Christian looked at him with hatred.

“But not the way he thinks.”

Lawson admitted using donor material without proper consent.

Criminal.

He also altered medication protocols.

But he denied intentionally causing miscarriages.

“Then why did Christian say he made sure I couldn't have children?”

Christian looked confused.

For the first time.

“I told Gabriel what Lawson told me.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That the treatments would eventually make carrying impossible.”

Lawson shook his head.

“I never said that.”

Christian stared.

Two men who had conspired around my body now accusing each other of misunderstanding.

Then Margaret spoke.

“The miscarriages may not have been caused deliberately at all.”

Silence.

My grief resisted that possibility.

I had turned three losses into murders in my mind because Christian's confession sounded clear.

Maybe he believed he caused them.

Maybe he was boasting about control he didn't actually possess.

Ugly men often exaggerate power.

The truth required evidence.

Margaret handed me pathology reviews.

No definitive proof of intentional loss.

I hated the uncertainty.

But I would not replace truth with emotionally satisfying certainty.

Then Evelyn revealed why Lawson had been using identities.

He had been running an illegal reproductive program for wealthy clients.

Christian’s family used it.

So did others.

My name served as a shield because my public association with Christian allowed certain billing and confidentiality structures.

Again, I had been useful.

Then Margaret looked toward Evelyn.

“Tell her the last part.”

For the first time, Evelyn hesitated.

Christian whispered:

“Mom?”

She looked at me.

“Your mother knew about the arrangement.”

My heart stopped.

“No.”

“She didn't approve.”

“Then what?”

“She made a deal with me.”

May you like

Years before her death.

And suddenly my mother's silence became another mystery.
