Chapter 6 - The revenge built on the wrong story

The Dayton file contained financial statements, board minutes, legal correspondence, and one recorded deposition from the failed venture.

Christian had spent fifteen years believing I destroyed his father, Robert Vale.

The records showed the opposite.

Robert had diverted investor funds into unauthorized speculative trades.

When the market turned, he attempted to hide the losses by pressuring me to alter revenue projections.

I refused.

Grace, who handled my bookkeeping in those days, documented everything.

Robert threatened to blame me.

When regulators began asking questions, he told Christian that I had betrayed him and stolen control of the company.

Christian inherited the grievance.

Not the facts.

That did not excuse what he later chose to do.

But it explained why he was willing to spend years building revenge around a version of his father that never existed.

Benjamin located Robert’s former attorney.

He still possessed a recorded statement made shortly before Robert’s death.

In it, Robert admitted:

“I told my son Ethan ruined me because I could not tell him I ruined myself.”

Christian had never heard it.

We did not release the recording publicly as a weapon.

It belonged in the investigation and any formal process that followed.

But knowing it existed changed my understanding.

Vanessa had entered my life for money.

Christian had entered through her for revenge.

Neither motive required love.

That evening, Vanessa finally asked to meet.

Not alone.

Through attorneys.

She looked different without the wedding dress.

Smaller somehow.

Still beautiful.

Still composed.

But no longer in control.

She admitted the affair with Christian.

Admitted meeting him in my penthouse.

Admitted reading the prenup repeatedly.

Admitted accessing the wedding-planning account and helping move money toward Vale-controlled entities.

She denied stealing the hardware token.

“Christian took it.”

“From my safe?”

“He said the code came from someone inside Northstar.”

That was new.

Someone at my company had provided the safe combination.

The betrayal expanded again.

We reviewed access histories.

Only a handful of people knew the emergency combination.

One was my chief strategy officer, Lucas Grant.

My closest friend from college.

The best man scheduled to stand beside me at the wedding.

He had disappeared from the chapel minutes after Lily interrupted the ceremony.

Security footage showed Lucas leaving through a service corridor before anyone announced the postponement.

His phone was turned off.

Benjamin traced recent payments.

Lucas had received three million dollars through a consulting arrangement with Christian.

Vanessa looked genuinely shocked.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

Christian had compartmentalized them.

Vanessa thought she was the insider.

Lucas believed he was the insider.

Each had been told the other was only a tool.

Lucas had provided:

safe access,

Northstar acquisition schedules,

executive travel information,

and the confidential board calendar.

He was the source that made the corporate theft possible.

Then our audit found something worse.

Lucas had altered Northstar’s internal models to exaggerate the risk of our upcoming acquisition.

If the deal failed publicly, he planned to lead a board revolt and replace me as CEO.

Christian would profit from the stock collapse.

Vanessa would receive money after marriage.

Lucas would take the company.

Three conspirators.

Three different rewards.

And each believed Christian had promised them the largest share.

But Lily’s wedding interruption destroyed the timing before any of them could complete the plan.

By the following morning, Lucas had contacted counsel and agreed to surrender company devices for independent review.

No chase.

No dramatic confrontation.

Just another smiling person I trusted becoming a file number.

Then Maria called me from home.

Her voice was trembling.

“Mr. Ethan, someone came to my apartment.”

My stomach dropped.

“Who?”

“Christian.”

“Is Lily safe?”

“Yes. We’re not there.”

“What did he want?”

“He left her rabbit outside the door.”

Lily’s worn stuffed rabbit had disappeared after the wedding.

Inside its torn seam, Maria found a small memory card.

The card contained hours of recordings from Vanessa and Christian’s meetings.

Lily had accidentally been carrying their hidden bug for weeks.

Someone had placed it inside the rabbit.

The metadata showed the recorder belonged to Lucas.

He had been secretly recording the other conspirators to betray them after the money moved.

Cliffhanger: Lily had not only stopped the wedding—her stuffed rabbit contained the evidence proving every conspirator planned to turn on the others once Ethan’s fortune was within reach.
